About Amanda and Kevin…
Landlocked in Chapel Hill, NC, Amanda and Kevin Miller founded Dock to Door in 2011 with the dream of bringing the best seafood from the coast of North Carolina straight to the doors of friends and neighbors in Orange County.
Amanda grew up vacationing at her grandparents’ bayside home in Topsail Island, North Carolina. Somewhere between late night flounder gigging and raking through the marshes for clams during low tide, she developed a passion for the freshest local catch. She spent eleven years working in the nonprofit sector, primarily in the arts. Amanda holds a BA in English and Gender Studies from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master’s degree in Arts Administration from Columbia University in New York City.
For Kevin, a Maryland native, summers spent on the Eastern Shore were packed with crab feasts, rockfish, and plenty of Old Bay Seasoning. He started working in the kitchen at a restaurant in his hometown of Poolesville, MD at age 13, and has been honing his recipe for the perfect crabcake ever since. After graduating from James Madison University, Kevin began working in management consulting for Accenture. He now works for SAS, a software solutions company based in Cary, NC.
Amanda and Kevin met in New York City in 2005, and married in Brooklyn in 2006. In September 2008, they moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where they schemed with one another about how to transition Amanda from a career in the nonprofit arts sector to a role in alignment with her passion for food.
She found that opportunity working back of house at a highly regarded fine dining restaurant in Chapel Hill in August 2010. While there, she became friends with the guys behind Southport Seafood. When she learned that they needed someone to sell seafood at the Chapel Hill Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings, she knew just the guy for the job. Three days later, Kevin started selling fresh seafood from North Carolina fishermen at the Saturday morning market.
The idea for starting a business dedicated to delivering fresh seafood caught by North Carolina fishermen started as a passing thought. It turned into a crazy idea and grew into Dock to Door, LLC.
